Innovations in Groove: Tal Bergman’s 'Drum Chase'
The drum set is one of the youngest popular instruments at around 100 years old. Its humble beginnings began when second line drummers in New Orleans wanted to condense their ensemble to one player for indoor performances such as vaudeville, minstrel shows, and a new emerging style of music at the time: Jazz. The invention of pedals which can thump a bass drum and click low-boys (the lower perched precursor to hi-hat cymbals) together sparked a new way of keeping time.
There is a lot of room for innovation with anything new. Drummers drive the energy and rhythmic backbone of every great song. As the saying goes, your band is only as good as your drummer!
Tal Bergman is a true innovator of the craft and has driven many a groove for legendary artists including Billy Idol, Chaka Kahn, B.B. King, Joe Bonamassa, Dave Mason, Herb Alpert, Heart, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and LL Cool J. You can catch Tal’s signature syncopated yet tasty chops with Rock Candy Funk Party, a Jazz Funk band he cocreated which also features Joe Bonamassa on guitar.
Tal’s latest solo release, Drum Chase, is chock full of infectious and energetic grooves bound to make even the shyest wallflower want to get up and dance. Each track features a different emotion with a full spectrum of rich drum tones to nod along to.
Here are some track highlights:
Tal’s drumming has made a mark on enthusiasts of this young instrument known as the drum set. This album is a drummer’s dream but is also effective in setting the scene for any fun action needing a dose of creative rhythm patterns. Stay funky, my friends!
